Nominee for Vice President: Michael Hawn

Michael HawnC. Michael Hawn, Professor of Church Music and Director, Master of Sacred Music Program at Perkins School of Theology, Southern Methodist University, joined the faculty in the fall of 1992. Prior to this he was a professor of church music at two Baptist seminaries for a total of fifteen years. A Baptist by heritage, Hawn has also been a church musician in a variety of ecumenical traditions including Presbyterian, Methodist, Episcopal, and Congregational churches and served as a cantor in a Reform Synagogue.

Hawn holds the Doctor of Musical Arts and the Master of Church Music degrees from Southern Baptist Theological Seminary, Louisville, Kentucky, and the Bachelor of Music Education degree from Wheaton College, Illinois.

Dr. Hawn is a frequent contributor to church music and liturgy periodicals in the areas of hymnology and worship, having published over 100 articles. Edited collections of songs and prayers include For the Living of These Days: Resources for Enriching Worship (1995)  and Halle Halle: We Sing the World Round (1999).

Hawn is also a student of global liturgical music and ecumenical worship, having received fellowships for study in Africa, Asia and South America for extended periods. This research led to the publication of two recent books, Gather into One: Praying and Singing Globally (Wm. B. Eerdmans, 2003) and One Bread, One Body: Exploring Cultural Diversity in Worship (The Alban Institute, 2003). He will have eighteen entries on African hymnody and global song in the forthcoming Cambridge Dictionary of Hymnology. In February 2006, Hawn will serve as the music director for the IX Assembly of the World Council of Churches in Porto Alegre, Brazil.

Hawn was elected to the Academy in 1986 and participates in the Liturgy and Culture Seminar.
